Prototype star cruiser (under construction)
« on: November 29, 2012, 01:01:34 am »
Hello all!

this is my latest LDD creation and I thought I would show you the progress :)

so I decided to build this because I loved my LEGO tantive and I wanted to build some sort of space cruiser that would be about the same size.
if the ship was minifig scale it would be slightly larger then a star destroyer

I started off without a clear picture of what I wanted to do, so I started messing around in LDD and building various hulls, then I came up with an idea for the rear region of the ship that I really like so I Built a prototype. after messing around with the prototype I felt it was kind of bland and boring, so I built a second version that I was satisfied with, I placed the rockets I designed in a position I liked them. after trying to come up with a plan for the rest of the ship I realized that my hull design didn't really go well with the rear section, so I brainstormed for a while and couldn't come up with anything good, so after a couple of days of thinking and looking online for reference material I came up with a couple of design features I wanted to add, so I grabbed a piece of paper and tried to sketch it out, Normally my drawing skills aren't that great, but I managed to make a pretty decent drawing, I mostly came up with it on the fly, but I was happy with the way it turned out (in the pic, the tantive shows the size it would be if it were real, and the 1x1 brick shows how big the model would actually be). so I went back to LDD and started building various side panels for the main length of the hull, at first I tried a studs-down approuch, but I didn't like the exposed underside of the bricks, so then I tried flipping it and building it studs-up, but this prevented me from keeping integrity in the model, I finally decided to take a studs-sideways approach and this allowed me to keep it sturdy. I adjusted the size of the panels and placed them where I liked them near the rear section, after that I built the top and Started prototyping the front.

so this is where I am at so far, If anyone has any comments or suggestions, I have open ears :)! (and like most of my creations...I stink at names, so I need ideas for that too)

Nice, how long is it going to be when finished?

A little longer then the LEGO tantive is, what you see in the last pic is about the length of it, once I make more progress I will take a comparison pic :)

Should be very impressive then.

Also, I'm moving this to WIPs, mostly to bring more attention to that subforum too =P

Ok here is an update! I have built part of the side, but I need some opinions on it, do you like it, or do I need to try something different?

also a size comparison with the Tantive :P

Impressive so far!
IMHO that part isn't bad, but it does somewhat stand out more than it should. Perhaps you could put a large hangar there? I always love to see hangars on large microscale ships.

Good idea! while researching for ideas I thought about doing a large hanger bay there, but my bro didn't think it would look good, so I went with this instead, but something about it didn't sit right with me, so I will definitely try a hanger, maybe with some small microscale model inside.

Here is a third prototype I made for the side, I have also posted it in a alternate color scheme as suggested by maverickdengo, so if you have any thoughts let me know

Here are 4 more picture updates of the progress so far, I have finished the midde section and started the front, the first pic is a prototype, the second is the nearly finished middle, and the last 2 are of the finished lower section of the front :) so let me know what you think!

Another update

In the second pic I have placed the mid scale star destroyer and a mini tantive alongside to show the scale. Although after taking the snapshot I did some calculating and found out my mini tantive is actually a bit too big, correct scale would be about 3 studs, this would make my ship about 2 miles long.

Here it is folks! Its been a couple of weeks since I've done anything with this so I wanted to get back and finish it. its not completely done yet, but its enough for the render. So tell me what you think!

I will try to finish it up and get some more renders at different angles.
